Narendra Modi is one of the most polarising figures in modern India. However, it is undeniable that he is extremely popular. Modi’s popularity mainly stems from propaganda, not from him being a good administrator.
The core of Modi’s message is that he is the saviour of the Hindus, who have been weakened by Muslims, beneficiaries of decades of “minority appeasement.” His message does not withstand even minor scrutiny. Muslims, an underclass in India, are lower on most development indices than Hindus.
The reality is that Muslims are a discriminated minority. Like all demagogues, Modi needs to blame the woes of his followers on someone. He and many of his followers, proponents of Hindutva, found a convenient scapegoat – Muslims. Fanning the flames of hatred against Muslims to build his career, Modi has created conditions that can eventually lead to civil war or genocide in India.
Let us quickly take a look at the BJP’s past to understand where they might happen in the future. The BJP is the political wing of the RSS, formed along the lines of fascist parties in Europe in the 1920s and 1930s. RSS leaders openly took inspiration from Mussolini and Hitler.
The leader of the RSS from 1940 to 1973, M.S. Golwalkar, has expressed his desire for the genocide of Muslims. Commenting on the Nuremberg Racial Laws of Nazi Germany, he said:
