In a recent speech, the Chairman of the Rajya Sabha reignited a longstanding and contentious debate surrounding welfare promises made during elections. Dismissing these measures as “freebies,” he sparked a renewed discussion about the legitimacy and long-term consequences of such policies.
While this is not the first time such remarks have been made, the repeated use of the term “freebies” or “revdi” to describe welfare measures is misleading. This rhetoric not only belittles the beneficiaries but also frames essential entitlements as mere charity rather than democratic rights.
