Pakistan is very volatile, politically and economically. Imran Khan, the former Prime Minister, and the current government, led by Shehbaz Sharif, formed by a coalition of parties, are at loggerheads.
In April 2022, manoeuvred by a no-confidence motion, Imran Khan was ousted from office. Though Khan relinquished his Prime Ministership, he mobilised large public rallies in which he accused the current coalition government of being an “imported government”, functioning on the orders of the United States. Khan has also accused Pakistan’s judiciary, bureaucracy and media of colluding with the opposition to enable the coalition government’s return to power in April.
Denouncing the current government as “corrupt “thieves”, he claims he can lead the people of Pakistan in their struggle for “true independence.” He has urged young people and others to wage the struggle for “haqiqi azadi” (‘real independence’).
His rallies, buffered by social media, proved very popular among the masses. Thousands of Pakistanis, regardless of age and background, attended these well-choreographed rallies; they featured music by renowned musicians and appearances by popular actors.
The social media campaigns he launched on YouTube and Twitter have gone viral. Khan’s speeches reached the Pakistani diaspora, worldwide. On Twitter, the hashtag #imported government na manzoor, meaning “imported government is unacceptable”, started trending.
