Donald Trump is the first and only President in the history of the United States to be impeached for a second time. In a historic vote, which took place with the capitol secured by armed National Guard troops inside and out, the US House of Representatives voted – by a margin of 232-197 – to charge Donald Trump for “high crimes and misdemeanors,” and for “inciting violence against the government of the United States.”
Furthermore, social media companies in the United States – the likes of Facebook, Twitter and YouTube – have indefinitely banned Trump from their platforms, using an internet law, Section 230 of the US’s Communications Decency Act.
What happens Next?
The Senate, the ‘upper house,’ will hold a trial to determine if Trump is indeed guilty of inciting an insurrection. For Trump to be convicted, a two-thirds majority in the Senate is required.
Last year, when the house, led by the Democrats, impeached Trump for obstruction of Congress and abuse of power, every Republican voted against both articles of impeachment. But now, a small but significant number of Republicans– ten Senators–support the move to expel Donald Trump from the office of the President of the United States.
