Tokyo Olympics 2020: A Report

The Tokyo 2020 Olympics present an incredible opportunity for Japan to present itself as a new-era technology master.

A year from now Tokyo will host the 34th Olympiad games. They will be held between Friday, July 24, 2020, and Sunday, August 9, 2020. That period, weather-wise, is among the most uncomfortable in Tokyo; temperatures rise to 35C, the humidity is high most of the time, around eighty per cent.

The International Olympic Committee (IOC), keeping in view US sponsors and TV networks’ preferences, stipulated that the bidders for the 2020 Olympics should hold the event between July 15 and Aug 31, 2020. Tokyo chose July 24 to Aug 9, 2020.

Tokyoites recall the Olympics of Showa 39 (1964), which were held in the salubrious autumn of October. The 1968 Mexico Games were also held in October. Since then, the sports and TV calendars have pushed the Summer Olympics into the ‘real summer’ – July and August.

The Tokyo Olympics seem to lack a popular buzz among the contented populace of Japan. This is what I found on my recent visit to Japan. The mascot, Miraitowa – a blend of the Future (Mirai) and Eternity (Towa) – is not widely seen in trains, hoardings or ads yet.
