The ‘Great Game’ Is On In Gabon

The 'Great Game' between the great powers is on. This time, it is in the land of the rising sun.

Ali Bongo, Gabon’s Prime Minister, who won a third term, was ousted in a military coup. In his place, the military named General Brice Oligui Nguema, the country’s new ‘interim president.’ Incidentally, General Nguema is Bongo’s cousin, the former head of the presidential guard.

The coup in Gabon ended the Bongo family’s 55-year hold on power in Gabon. Ali Bongo’s father, El Hadj Omar Bongo Ondimba, was President for almost 42 years. He ruled from 1967 until 2009. After his death, his son took over the presidency through an election criticised as a dynastic handover.
