Narendra Modi is a skilled orator. He delivers fantastic speeches that tactfully obfuscate facts. Speaking at an election rally in Amreli, Gujarat, the Prime Minister of India, known for his penchant for self-aggrandisement, said:
In the last five years, no bomb blast took place in any other part of the country. We managed to contain terrorism to just two and a half districts in Jammu and Kashmir.
Are his claims valid?
According to the data published in the Rajya Sabha by the Government of India’s Home Ministry, “unstarred question No 1039, dated 19.12. 2018,” there were two “major terrorist attacks in the Hinterland of the country” – one in 2015 and the other in 2016.
The state of Jammu and Kashmir witnessed 208 terrorist incidents in 2015, 322 terrorist incidents in 2016, and 342 terrorist incidents in 2017. According to another document published by the Government of India, Ministry of Home Affairs, Unstarred Question Number 2970, Jammu and Kashmir witnessed over 64 terrorist incidents (up to 11 March 2018). The statistics mentioned above do not include the Pulwama attack in February 2019 in which over 44 people were killed and many others injured.
