Rape, Honour Killings & Violence Against Dalits: Methods of Public Execution To Remind Them ‘Their Place’

A nine-year-old girl Dalit girl who went to fetch water at a cremartorium, was gang-raped, murdered, and forcefully cremated by a Hindu priest and his accomplices in India’s capital, New Delhi. This horrific incident–the latest instance of sexual assault against a dalit girlprompted demonstrations in Delhi.

It is 2021, and in principle ‘untouchability’ is abolished. One may want to argue that these events used to occur long ago and that–with urbanisation and modernisation–things are changing. Crimes against Dalits, one may say, were much more prevalent then than they are now.

So, why does violence against Dalits continue? Are India’s Dalits, formerly considered untouchables, safe? The answer, clearly, is NO.

A closer look at the data shows violence against Dalits has increased dramatically. Caste based atrocities have increased; with globalisation, castes discrimination has spread across the world.
