Japan is hosting the fourteenth meeting of the Group of Twenty (G20) this year in Osaka. This meeting, held in the country’s second largest city, brings together heads of states from thirty-seven countries and international institutions to discuss ways to build a ‘human-centred future society.’
The issues likely to be deliberated at the summit include financial stability, free trade, inclusive economic growth (including taxation and digital economy), climate change, energy security, marine plastic waste, infrastructure, ageing, and artificial intelligence (AI).
The last G20 summit was held only a short while ago–December 2018, at Buenos Aires, Argentina. But much has happened–politically and geo-politically–in these six months. The US and China got into a trade war. The US imposed sanctions on Iran and is pushing its allies not to trade with the so-called ‘rogue nation.’ Japan quietly made adjustments with China and consented to the Belt and Road Initiative. India signed a pact with Russia to buy the S400 missiles. China started the 5G, much to the United States’ dismay. Thanks to the unpredictable nature of the current US administration, tensions between India and the United States have also come to the surface.
Politically, there have been some significant developments, especially in India and Indonesia. Narendra Modi got re-elected to be the Prime Minister of India with a large majority; Joko Widodo has also been re-elected to become the President of Indonesia.
