A growing number of political propagandists have argued that India must hark back to its great civilisational values. Distorting history, they argue that only through political change and by harking back to the glorious past will the so-called “New-India” attain real glory. They want a Hindu Rashtra, where the non-Hindus are forced to accept their second class status.
I argue that the New India, instead of progressing, is regressing–politically, economically, socially, and morally. India is turning into a majoritarian, neo-fascist state. The social and economic fabric of the country is being severely damaged.
Let me make my case.
Indian civilisation prevailed over a geographical area much bigger than the Republic of India. That civilisation was open to the rest of the world, ready to share, learn, and critically analyse questions–philosophical or otherwise–without dogmatism. Ashoka the Great sent missionaries to share the message of Buddhism to the known world; it is perhaps the earliest instance of peaceful and sensible globalisation.
