Searching for a new job is always tough. It can turn out to be quite an ordeal when you not only have to weigh your skills and abilities against the laundry list of “required qualifications” meted out by the organisation, but also consider whether the organisation is the right fit for your unique needs.
A few months ago, a former colleague, Pooja*, reached out to me to inquire whether she should disclose her diagnosis of bipolar mood disorder to a potential employer during the early stages of the interview process. Would they embrace the added value she brought or use the diagnosis as an excuse to dismiss her candidacy?
Did they have a policy on accommodations?
These are essential questions for anyone with a mental illness or disability, but they can’t always be broached openly in the interview process, despite decades of activism and legal victories globally.
