Elections Amidst A Pandemic

The state elections amidst the pandemic are a reflection of the grim reality we are living through.

It would be difficult to undo the damage done to the hundreds of thousands of people infected with COVID by reckless electioneering. It is no secret that tens of thousands of people have been infected with the virus and many have died.

Election officials, journalists, policemen, political workers and people who attended these super-spreader events have, in one way or another, been afflicted with the disease and death.

The Election Commission of India’s reckless decision has cost many a lives. But the election results are out, and the writing is on the wall. In three states, people have rejected the divisive, communal and hate-spreading politics.

Though the elections took place in four states and a Union Territory–West Bengal, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Assam, and Puducherry–the epic battle in West Bengal has attracted more attention than the rest of the four put together.

It’s a David and Goliath story. Mamata Banerjee won a landslide victory, defeating the mighty Modi, and retained her position as the Chief Minister of West Bengal. For Modi, it’s a colossal defeat.
