“Prime Minister Modi stopped the war in Ukraine and brought back young people who were stuck in that country,” claimed a BJP leader, Bandi Sanjay. Speaking at a political rally in Hyderabad, he repeated the claim—that Prime Minister Modi had stopped the war in Ukraine—multiple times.
Interestingly, the country’s most powerful men who were on the dais—Prime Minister Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah, Chief Minister of India’s largest state, Uttar Pradesh, Ajay Singh Bisht alias Yogi Adityanath, the BJP party president JP Nadda, among others— listened intently to the blatant lie that was peddled to the masses.
A few days back, at the G20 Foreign Ministers Summit in Bali, Indonesia, the Russia-Ukraine war dominated the conversation. In a post-COVID world, Russia’s naked aggression on Ukraine has had a big impact across the world—soaring energy prices, ballooning food prices and the risk of full-blown nuclear war.
India has maintained a neutral position on the Russia-Ukraine war. India also abstained from the UN vote against Russia. Amidst intense criticism, India’s foreign minister Dr S Jaishankar claimed Europe is “mischaracterising” India’s position on the Russia-Ukraine war. Yet, in the last year, India and China, purchased enormous amounts of oil and gas from the Russia.
