Battling Covid 19 comes with its own set of challenges. In addition to physical exhaustion, low immunity among Covid patients is causing infections such as Black Fungus, (also known as Mucormycosis) and White Fungus.
Now, cases of Green Fungus infection are being reported from various parts of the country. The first case was identified in Madhya Pradesh – a 34-year-old man was undergoing treatment at Indore’s Aurobindo Hospital for one-and-a-half-month. “He had 90 per cent lung infection. During diagnosis, the green fungus was detected in his lungs, which is different from Mucormycosis or Black Fungus. This possibly is the first green fungus case in the country,” said Apoorva Tiwari, district data manager with the health department in Indore, speaking to the ANI.
Cases were also identified in Kerala and Punjab. Two cases of green fungus have been reported from Punjab. A 44-year-old patient was discharged from Sacred Heart Hospital after a successful recovery from Covid 19. However, he was readmitted.
“Since the patient was a follow-up case of severe Covid-19 infection, the possibility of fungal infection was to be ruled out and hence a series of medical investigations like bronchoscopy, microbial cultures were performed while also ruling out the likelihood of any bacterial infection or Tuberculosis. The fungal culture report came positive for aspergillus flavus (green fungus). Anti-fungal medications are being given to the patient and his condition is improving,” said pulmonologist Dr Ashutosh Dhanuka.
