Aliya Rama Raya’s story stands testament to the axiom that there are no permanent friends and no permanent enemies in politics.

In the long-destroyed yet unforgotten Vijayanagara Empire, there were four dynasties. The Tuluva dynasty was the third great dynasty of the Vijayanagara empire. And Aliya Rama Raya was the last king of the dynasty. The story of his defeat by the Muslim rulers of the Deccan and the subsequent downfall of the Vijayanagara empire is quite tragic.

The Tuluva dynasty began with the regent of the previous dynasty taking over. Viranarasimha Raya became the first king of the dynasty. Although he was the first, he wasn’t the most popular. Multiple rebellions overshadowed Viranasimha Raya’s reign; the king spent much of his time trying to maintain peace. Yet he paved the way for other kings.

When Viranarasimha died, his son Krishnadev Raya came to power. Krishnadev Raya, the most popular king of the Vijayanagara empire, succeeded in subjugating his enemies. Under his rule, the Empire prospered and was comparatively peaceful.

After Krishnadev Raya’s death, his brother Acyutha Raya became king. Achyutha Raya had to deal with his overly ambitious regent, Aliya Rama Raya, who tried to capture the throne.

When Achyutha Raya died, his nephew, Sadasiva Raya, took over. Unfortunately, Sadasiva Raya was too young, and Rama Raya became the de facto ruler of the Empire. Eventually, Rama Raya was recognised as the last king of the Tuluva Dynasty.
