That the world's largest democracy has swiftly descended into an authoritarian state is a matter of great concern.

We start with a tale of two juveniles, one in Stockholm and the other in Delhi. The former is of Greta Thunberg, 17, who has been fighting for the cause of preserving the life-supporting environment, which some politicians holding high office are doing their utmost to destroy as they chase profit, deliberately and sinfully, ignoring the cost.

The other remains nameless till now. Let us call him X. He shouted, ‘Delhi Police, Zindabad’ and shot a young student of Jamia Milia, not much older than him, with a country pistol, even as Delhi policemen watched calmly. It is generally believed that X got inspired (sic) by two leaders of the ruling party, the BJP. One leader, for example, asked the crowd at an election meeting:

What shall we do to these protesters?

The crowd cheered: “ Goli Maro” (Shoot them down). The speaker agreed enthusiastically, encouraging the crowd.

However, it is perplexing to hear the defence put out by the apologists of the ruling party, at times masquerading as ‘political analysts,’ with the concurrence of some sections of the mainstream media, beholden to the establishment. The debate on television has become acrimonious, and, often, those who have a weaker case shout and scream louder. One of their techniques is to talk out of turn to bully the other panellists.
