When Alexander, the King of Macedonia, conquered parts of the Indian subcontinent, he saw a bird that was often observed in Hellenistic imagery. It was a peacock. He was so taken with its beauty that he declared capital punishment for anybody who killed the bird.
Today, the Peacock is India’s national bird. It is also a bird that survived for four thousand years against climate change and the mass destruction of ecology caused by humans, making it one of the world’s oldest ornamental birds. While the other beautiful birds have faced extinction, peacocks thrived and remained outside the IUCN list of endangered species. Why? Could it be because they are a part of many myths and are revered for their beauty?
