Advances in imaging, electrical recording and optogenetics are giving scientists new ways to understand and influence brain activity.

A cubic millimetre of brain tissue, roughly the size of a poppy seed, contains tens of thousands of neurons and supporting cells. Each cell interacts with others through networks that researchers are still working to understand.

Neuroscience has advanced by developing ways to map these networks, record their activity, and, more recently, control the cells that form them. Each advance has let researchers ask questions previous generations could not answer, bringing the possibility of intervening in brain function closer to clinical practice.
