We open a door together
to reach the stars
a little dizzy
breathless from the running
from beating inside
each other’s chests
every bone a ladder step
we use to climb
into the lap of the dark
that sips and sips of mystery
and calls out
to come ride its mares
windswept dusky
their tails in our hands
shiny and damp
Little by little
the lights go out
until
a halo is all that is left
around your index finger
a ring through which we fall
into lightness
without end

Madras Courier originally ran as a broadsheet with a poetry section. It was a time when readers felt comfortable sharing glimpses of their lives through verse. If you have a poem you’d like to submit, do email us at [email protected].
