On the day after Diwali
Mama dog wanders around
In the women’s hospital.
Her puppies,
Born in a hole somewhere behind the bushes
Away from traffic, sadist humans, and the storm
Happily hop around, chewing yellow grass.
Their little pink mouths
Are out to discover the wicked world
Which, at times, can also be pretty.
