It is very rare for a town to be called a land of arts and crafts. Yet Nirmal in Alibad District, Telangana, is famous throughout the country for its art.
Nirmal paintings express the royal and everyday, the flowers and the fruits, and a range of expressions through a vivid, extensive colour palette. The ‘Naqash’ community has practised the art since the fourteenth century.
The paintings were inspired by the Kangra school, the Ajanta schools, and the miniature drawings by the Mughals. They narrate stories from the Ramayana and Mahabharata. The Mughals loved the art form and patronised them.
Once, the Nizam of Hyderabad came to visit Nirmal. The people of Nirmal used their artistry to decorate the venue and his seat. The Nizam was so impressed by the artwork that he patronised them.
These days artists use soft white wood called Puniki to make the drawings, which are then primed and painted. The process of making these crafts is very intricate and laborious; it involves a detailed process.
