The sacred birds of ancient Egypt singing the song of songs—the song of Solomon—yearn for each other & celebrate love.

Two Madagascan hoopoes
live in my house orchard
they are building a nest
in a concrete wall-hole

I watch them from a distance,
so not to disturb them,
admire their gorgeous russet
colours, their regal crowns

they don’t stay at one place
so I can’t photograph them,
I wait patiently, hiding
to capture their elegance,

their black and white striped
wings like a zebra, their wise
eyes like a black dew drop
reminds me of the wise Hoopoe

of Attar in The Conference
of the Birds, leading birds
to legendary Simorgh
crossing seven valleys
