A Nodding Acquaintance

A thought-provoking, refined and scholastic poem that questions you to think about the things you take for granted.

The things I paid attention to
The things I was proud of

The smile on the lips
The sparkle in the eye
The dazzling wit
The lightning repartee

My weaknesses
My fleeting mistresses
Met their match
In the one I neglected

Whose silence I thought
Was acceptance
Whose tirelessness I assumed
Was my entitlement

The one I abused
As if by right
Slurping the last drops
Of an over-sized ice-cream

Digging into a luscious sweet
Popping a crunchy pakoda
Staying up late
