The death of a laboratory worker in Siberia has prompted a precautionary quarantine of almost 200 people and raised questions about a possible case of pneumonic plague. However, Russian authorities have yet to confirm what caused her illness.
Darya Shipilova, 28, became ill while working at the Irkutsk Anti-Plague Research Institute of Siberia and the Far East and died on October 2. The circumstances of her death remain unclear.
