Don’t Rewrite The Constitution—Recommit to Secularism & Socialism

Democracy must not be merely a political form. It must become a social and moral order rooted in liberty, equality, and fraternity.

In an age of growing inequality and sectarianism, India’s constitutional values of secularism and socialism are not relics of the past. They are the remedies for our fractured present and uncertain future.

In recent times, attacks on the Constitution and constitutional morality have become more overt. The subversion of democracy and its apparatus, which enable equal recognition and rights for all, has grown increasingly visible.

One of the most disturbing recent developments was the call to remove the words “secularism” and “socialism” from the Preamble of the Constitution. This call, which RSS General Secretary Dattatreya Hosabale made, was echoed by several BJP leaders. Notably, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma argued that these are Western concepts and said this is a “golden time” to eliminate them.
