The wreckage of AI171 still smoulders. But what truly fell was trust—trust in aviation, in engineering, in the institutions meant to keep people safe.

The morning sky over Ahmedabad turned dark without warning. Air India Flight AI171, a Boeing 787 Dreamliner, had just taken off from Runway 23 at Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport.

Within moments, the aircraft vanished from view. Barely 600 feet above the ground, it began to fall. Moments later, it crashed into a residential block, erupting into flame. A building collapsed. Trees were set ablaze. Thick smoke rose into the heat. Dazed and bloodied survivors were rushed to overcrowded hospitals.
