When Modi introduced the idea of Atmanirbhar Bharat, it was supposed to promote self-reliance in manufacturing. One example of this, which he gave recently, was vaccines. In a video conference launch for the Kindle version of Swami Chidbhavananda’s Bhagavad Gita, he said:
Our scientists worked in a quick time to come out with vaccines. Now, India is humbled that vaccines made in India are going around the world. We want to heal as well as help humanity. This is exactly what the Bhagavad Gita teaches us.
Fatuous words. Despite running the administration for almost 8 years, the Modi government has not achieved self-reliance. If it had, we wouldn’t be so affected by what happens in the U.S.
There are many reasons–some of which include weak exports and decreasing domestic consumption, which might have to do with an increase in inflation. If India truly has to become Atmanirbhar, it needs to focus on manufacturing goods that are sent to other countries. That means the government would not want to promote imports because they want to be able to provide goods by themselves. Unfortunately, the Finance Minister thinks otherwise.
