Around the world, there is an army of artists, who sneak up on walls and rob them of their ugliness. They leave traces of their identity along with bright colour splashes and meaningful words. These artists, armed with brushes and paints, are creative Robin Hoods of the world of colours, as they give more than they take. More importantly, they possess a weapon that is more dangerous than any nuclear missile – the creative urge to make a difference.
They are the artists behind what we call “graffiti.” The term comes from the same Italian word, meaning “scribbles.” True to its etymology, graffiti is a series of “scribbles” on unconventional surfaces. Some are just attempts at beautifying a barren body, while others have a strong message to convey. This art form that fosters rebellion and showcases creativity has an exciting and profoundly insightful history.
