Saranya Subramanian’s charming verse tells you what it feels like to wake up to an earth that is a bit off-balance.

This morning, the earth woke up
a little bit hungover, staggering on one side,
one heel broken, head tilted,
to avoid the sun’s judgmental glare

So we all woke up on the wrong side of the
bed today – head down, legs up, off-balance
Our necks craned towards one side
to avoid morning dew drops from pouring into our mouths

One foot was on the ground, the other was above it
Gravity was a cruel mistress;
today she tossed us around
from left to right

We became children on a seesaw, springing
up to a sky that pressed us back down. Now I’m
lying on the floor of my room,
watching my bookshelf leaning towards me
