Like all needles, this is sharp and bright
but this is no ordinary haystack:
it has an infinite number of pieces of hay.
Not many people take the trouble
to look for the needle – it is easier
to pick up bits of hay at random.
There are so many and it doesn’t take
much to pretend that a bit of hay
is shiny like pure gold. The ‘people’
can always be trusted to believe
much of what they are told, as long
as it is not the truth. After all, the needle
is so small.
Madras Courier originally ran as a broadsheet with a poetry section. It was a time when readers felt comfortable sharing glimpses of their lives through verse. If you too have a poem you’d like to submit, do email us at firstname.lastname@example.org.
