The sky was spread like a sheet
decorated with shining stars
I saw moon rising over the trees
lightening up the evening as sapphire
an old couple walked over the bridge holding hands
pink dolphins leaped from the river Negra
to greet the eternal love birds
and insects sang full throat in a certain raga
when the moon had ascended above us
I saw the Amazon glowing that night
my soul began singing an ancient song
and I was filled with celestial light.
Madras Courier originally ran as a broadsheet with a poetry section. It was a time when readers felt comfortable sharing glimpses of their lives through verse. If you too have a poem you’d like to submit, do mail us at firstname.lastname@example.org.
